Xerosis/Extremely Dry Skin

Definition:

A condition where skin becomes rough, scaly and, often times, itchy. It is more of a descriptive term rather than a diagnosis but can be associated with many internal conditions and external skin diseases.

What Causes Xerosis/Extremely Dry Skin:

It can be related to environmental factors, genetic disorders, excessive bathing, atopic dermatitis, diabetes, renal disease, malnutrition, or age.

Management Strategy:

Determining the underlying cause is essential then counseling regarding good skin care habits is important to resolve the symptoms. Symptomatic treatments include medical (topical and oral) as well as light-based therapies.
