Melasma

Definition:

Also known as Hyperpigmentation and Pregnancy Mask, this mottled, brown pigmentation occurs on the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin.

What Causes Melasma:

The precise cause is unknown, however, it’s thought to be related to increased sun exposure and hormonal fluctuations from either birth control pills or during pregnancy. Latina and Asian women most commonly develop the latter.

Management Strategy:

Prescription creams, cosmetic peels and microdermabrasion and light-based therapy are used individually or at times in conjunction depending on the individual case.
