Lentigos/Brown Spots

Definition:

Lentigos are small, localized brown spots and that appear as a result of chronic sun exposure. They usually occur in areas that get the most sun such as the face, neck, chest, back, arms and hands. Note: These are different from age spots and freckles.

What Causes Lentigos/Brown Spots:

Chronic sun exposure leads to the body’s natural response of producing increased pigment cells, which results in these darkly pigmented spots.

Management Strategy:

Topical medications, cosmetic treatments and light-based therapy work best, however, in some cases surgical options may be considered. To prevent further occurrence, avoid sun exposure without proper protection.
